1997 was a sad year for Porsche enthusiasts as external forces, made 1997 the last of the Air-cooled Naturally aspirated 911s.

For those of us who had grown up fascinated by these German rear engined cars, dreaming that one day we would own one and listening to the unmistakable clatter of a flat-6 cylinder engine, as the car squatted down and the 911 accelerated away, you know exactly what I mean !

Porsche 911s weren't like any other car, noisy, exciting, alive and with more recorded racing wins than any car ever built. This it the sort of heritage that any Brand would love to have.

The 993 version 911 represents the last of an era and the pinnacle of Porsches much loved air-cooled 911.
Unlike the 964 that preceded it, the 993 received a huge leap in technology and a substantial evolution of its trademark looks.
It was universally acclaimed as being one of the most beautiful 911's ever penned with its stunning curves.

In its final form the normally aspirated 993 engine produced 285HP and now had Varioram technology which gave it a noticeable surge above 4,000 rpm. This was mated to Porsches new LSA ( Light Stable & Agile ) chassis which now featured Porsches 'Weisach' multi-link rear suspension system, essentially a mechanical pre-cursor to today's rear-wheel steering. Overall it created a quicker, safer 911 with reduced road noise.

The viscous coupling infinitely adjustable 4wd system of the 993 was far less complex than that found in the 964 and was in the region of 90kg lighter. Porsche said you could not tell it was a 4WD car and often challenged customers to tell the difference at vehicle launches by covering up the badges. People were amazed, it handled just like a 2WD car until things became a little slippery and then just enhanced the grip as required.

That brings us to the car we have here, it is a Carrera 4S, in fact the 993 was the 1st 911 to wear the '4S' moniker; the 'S' for something special referring to the 'Turbo' look chassis with Turbo brakes and suspension and the 4 for 4WD.

Now every Porsche model is special for one reason or another. But this represents the very end of an Air-cool era, where the cars were built by Germans and by hand.

On a personal note, the Carrera 4S is one of my favorites!

Firstly they are rare! Porsche Cars Australia only brought 61 unit to Australia ( Compare that to 95 x 993 Carrera S or 144 x 993 Turbos! )

Secondly because there were no shortcuts with the quality of construction. It was all 993 Turbo parts! 993 Turbo Body, Brakes, suspension, Non-invasive AWD, Full leather Interior, 18" Turbo Twist wheels. If it was standard on the 993 Turbo, then it was standard on the Carrera 4S too. No wheel spacers, no small wheels, just all Turbo.

Finally for the engine. The upgraded 993 3.6 Liter now with "Varioram" induction not only sounded great, it also produced a heathy 285 bhp. It beathed better than the previous engine had more power and torque, but most importantly it revved to 6,800 rpm as sounded exactly as a 911 should. The harder you rev the more power you get. Brilliant!

Yes, I would like a 993 Carrera 4S sitting in my garage.

This particular car has been know to us since 2012 when we started servicing it. It started life in Western Australia being delivered in April of 1997, in Arctic silver over full Boxster Red Leather. We have previously sold it more than once and done a great deal of work to it over the years.
