Motorsport regulation changes have often been the catalyst for some of Porsche’s greatest road cars, and the mid-1970s were no exception. When FIA rules for the World Manufacturers Sports Car Championship were revised, Porsche responded by developing a turbocharged version of the 911 that would become one of the most iconic performance cars of its era – the 930 Turbo.
The road-going 930 was essential in homologating Porsche’s competition cars of the time, most notably the 934, 935 and 936. Those race cars went on to dominate international endurance racing across multiple FIA categories, securing victories and championships at some of the world’s most famous circuits including Le Mans, Daytona, Sebring, Spa and the Nürburgring.
Although originally created to support Porsche’s motorsport program, the 930 quickly established its own legacy. Its dramatic wide-body styling, aggressive stance and explosive turbocharged performance made it an instant classic. Over its 14-year production run from 1975 to 1989, Porsche built just over 21,000 examples, cementing the model as one of the most recognisable variants of the 911.
Within that production run, certain years are particularly sought after. Early cars from 1975 represent the rawest version of the model – lighter, more mechanical in feel and known for their distinctive pre-intercooler turbo power delivery. At the opposite end of the timeline sits the final 1989 model year, which benefits from years of continuous Porsche development along with several refinements that improved drivability and usability.
Factory right-hand drive examples from 1989 are especially rare, with fewer than 200 produced and none officially delivered to Australia when new. As a result, locating a high-quality example often requires sourcing a car from overseas.
The car offered here, chassis #712, has a particularly interesting background. Originally intended for South Africa, it was instead delivered new to its first owner in Singapore through Stuttgart Auto, Porsche AG’s authorised distributor at the time. Around 1990 the car was purchased by its second owner, who kept it for an impressive 26 years before bringing it to Australia as a personal import in 1999.
The 3rd owner purchased the car in 2016 after recognising how uncommon it is to find a genuine right-hand drive 1989 930 in Australia, particularly one that has spent its life in relatively dry climates. After acquiring the car, the owner undertook a program of careful cosmetic and mechanical attention to bring the car to its current standard.
As part of this process the engine was fully rebuilt as preventative maintenance due to its age, rather than any major fault. During the rebuild a new clutch was installed and a number of additional service items were addressed by respected Porsche specialists in Brisbane.
Today chassis #712 presents extremely well and is accompanied by its original logbooks and has just had its yearly service and a full pre-sales inspection. Showing approximately 125,000 kilometres and having had less than a handful of owners over its lifetime, this matching numbers 930 represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the final and most developed versions of Porsche’s legendary turbocharged 911.
